Erik Andriesse Dutch, 1957-1993
Sunflowers and amaryllises are two of the favourite subjects for artist Erik Andriesse (1957-1993). Orchids, lilies, magnolias and poppies have also inspired him to make his most impressive works. Erik Andriesse is a lavish colourist. The paint is usually dripping and splashing off his canvases and flowers lend themselves perfectly to such explosions of colour. For Andriesse the visual experience is essential. The artist hardly ever commented on the actual content of his work. Contrary to many of his colleagues, he rarely wanted to put forward a message or tell a story. He was more interested in how he painted than in what he painted. The renewed attention to and appreciation of figurative painting in the 1980s form the context for his work, but this does not lead to symbolism, quotes or references as was the case for many of his colleagues from that time.
