In art, the notion of versatility can sometimes give way to a certain blandness, suggestive of an inability to make choices. There is no hint of this in the multidisciplinary approach of artist Mark Brusse. In his own words, by regularly switching techniques and materials, he guards against the endless repetition of something that requires no effort on his part. For this artist, 'L'Art et la Vie' are one and the same thing. To this day, it is impossible to look at, or read about Brusse's artistic and exceptionally diverse oeuvre without seeing parallels with his eventful and intense life.

The retrospective exhibition Mark Brusse. Shapes of Silence can be visited at Museum Beelden aan Zee in The Hague until 8 May. The catalog published on the occasion is for sale in the gallery.
