Frieze Masters 2019: Stand E12
Jan Schoonhoven (1914-1994) was one of the most modest artists imaginable: he remained a civil servant at the Dutch Post Office right up to his retirement. Alongside his life as an artist he had a need for this regularity, for the daily rhythm of a structured existence. He was no different as an artist: regularity, rhythm, seriality were his hallmarks, once he and his friends Armando, Peeters and Henderikse came together in the NUL group, the Dutch 'branch' of the international ZERO movement.
The international reputation of this movement is now evident. It is striking that Piet Mondrian is the Netherlands' most famous artist in the first half of the 20thcentury and it now looks like an artist with a similarly geometric-abstract form language, Jan Schoonhoven is being presented as a worthy successor for the second half of the century.
Over the past twenty years BorzoGallery has consistently collected and exhibited works by Schoonhoven. At Frieze Masters London 2019, we will show a selection of his famous white reliefs from the sixties and seventies, as well as a range of his amazing drawings.
